The experiments on “relative motion of earth and ether” have been completed and the result decidedly negative.

Эксперименты по “относительному движению Земли и эфира” были завершены и результат определенно отрицательный.

The expected deviation of the interference fringes from the zero should have been 0.40 of a fringe – the maximum displacement was .02 and the average much less than .01 – and then not in the right place.

Ожидаемое отклонение полос интерференции от нуля должно было быть 0,40 полосы — максимальное смещение было 0,02 и среднее много меньше, чем 0,01 —  и к тому же в неправильном месте.

As displacement is proportional to squares of the relative velocities it follows that if the ether does slip past the earth that the relative velocity is less than one sixth of earths velocity.

Поскольку смещение пропорционально квадратам относительных скоростей, из этого следует, что если эфир плавно перемещается мимо Земли, его относительная скорость — меньше, чем 1/6 от скорости Земли.

I enclose a poor photograph of the apparatus– which consists of a stone five ft. square and one foot thick which floats on mercury and which holds the optical parts - Light from an argand lamp falls on a part going to bcbcbcbafand part to dedededaf.
